When do Babies start Teething?
Teething is not fun! I don’t usually like to start sounding negative but if you have already started experiencing teething with your little one then you will know what I mean! And if you haven’t yet, it won’t be too far away! When does teething start? Why does it hurt and what can you do about it? If these are your questions then read on!
Teething Signs and Symptoms
Teething can start anywhere from 6 months (and sometimes earlier!) and generally children will have a full set of 20 primary teeth by 3 years of age. Of course this can differ from each child. You may be lucky as some babies don’t experience any symptoms but for most babies and their parents it is not a pleasant time! If your little one is upset, irritable, has disrupted sleep, is dribbling, has a loss in appetite, has a rash around their mouth, flushed cheeks, sucking on their toys, fingers or has their fists in their mouth, then this is an indication of teething.
Why does Teething Hurt?
Developing teeth in babies push up through the gums which can cause irritation, pain and swelling. If you remember what it is like when you were getting your wisdom teeth through, it is something similar to that.
What can you do?
There is nothing like TLC when they are not feeling so great so be prepared, they will need lots of cuddles! Distract them with toys, rattles and sing songs to them are just a few ways to take their mind off the pain. If you have something cold for your baby to bite or chew on, this can help with relieving the pressure and soothe their inflamed gums.
Teething gel can also be a good way to relieve teething pain. Look for natural gels that don't contain any nasty ingredients. Consider Jack N' Jill which is a natural gel and a good alternative to Bonjela.
Another great way to relieve the pain is by using silicone teethers. The silicone beads will soothe and massage sore gums as your baby chews on them.
